Let CAP Scores Determine Your Approach to Managing Crime & Loss

Developed by CAP Index’s team of criminologists over decades of sophisticated research, the CAP Index Scoring System® is a process used to generate CAP Scores. These scores provide a relative measure of the likelihood that crime and loss will occur at a given address within the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Mexico.

The CAP Index Scoring System sets the foundation for CAP Index’s entire suite of solutions and is updated annually to reflect evolving risks.

Leveraging Objective Data

The CAP Index Scoring System incorporates data sets that include over 100 demographic socio-economic factors. Our model integrates information on predictors of behavior, police reports, and client loss incidents:

An Analytical Approach to Help You Predict the Risk of Crime

The CAP Index Scoring System uses sophisticated forecasting techniques that combine demographic and business statistics with crime and loss data to calculate crime risk. We base our forecasting approach on “Social Disorganization Theory,” which asserts that higher degrees of social problems in a neighborhood tend to correlate with higher levels of crime in that location.

CAP Index scores are:

  • Unbiased
  • Nondiscriminatory
  • Data-driven
  • Accurate
  • Consistent
  • Proven

The CAP Index Scoring System provides four methodologies to score a specific address. These Scoring Methodologies were developed to address the fact that perpetrators of crime may travel to different types of business locations in order to commit crimes. The Scoring Methodologies reflect this “journey to crime” and how this journey may affect the risk of crime within the surrounding geographic areas. This variable approach ensures the CAP Index Scoring System is tailored to each industry and organization.

CAP Reports are critical to my risk assessments. They have enabled us to take a more surgical approach to investing in our stores that need it the most.

Our property selectors are not discouraged from a site just because it receives a high score. What we do is issue every store – all of them – a security classification. The classification determines how we allocate our security resources to that store.

    Claude Verville,
    Lowe’s

CAP Index's online platform, CRIMECAST, is great. It is easy to use and quick!

    Ken Wieczorek,
    Bank of America

In industries where there is high public contact and a customer is coming to our location (such as retail), why would you leave it to chance when planning security when there is an easy, affordable tool? When investing a million dollars on a location, what is this small charge compared to what it may cost you when you get sued?

    Jay Beighley,
    Nationwide Insurance

CAP Index assessments are a must for anyone engaged in asset protection. The new website is much improved and as important, easy to navigate.

    Bruce List,
