Steven K. Aurand
President and CEO
A researcher and statistician, Steven K. Aurand co-founded CAP Index in 1988 and is the company’s President and CEO. Today, the company he leads is the most trusted and recognized source of crime risk information for businesses and government agencies throughout the US, the UK, and Canada.
Mr. Aurand is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Statistical Association, American Sociological Association, and American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS). He co-authored Delinquency in Puerto Rico: The 1970 Birth Cohort Study, published by Greenwood Press.
Mr. Aurand holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Music from Haverford College. He has completed graduate studies in Criminology and Statistics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Walter E. Palmer
Executive Vice President
Walter E. Palmer serves as Executive Vice President and spearheads the company’s consulting practice as well as guiding corporate strategy. Mr. Palmer has more than thirty-five years of experience in a wide range of security and loss prevention disciplines and is recognized as a leading consultant in the Asset Protection industry.
Palmer serves as a strategic advisor to multiple industry associations and groups and is a frequent speaker at events around the globe and author for industry and mainstream media publications. He is a Certified Forensic Interviewer and Certified Fraud Examiner and has been adjunct faculty at both the university level and for industry seminars. He received his Bachelor of Science from Eastern Kentucky University majoring in Security and Loss Prevention with a minor in Fire and Safety Engineering.
Stephen B. Longo
VP of Strategic Initiatives
Stephen Longo serves as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and oversees the company’s business development efforts, acts as the primary liaison for several loss prevention and risk management industry trade groups, and manages special projects. He currently leads CAP Index’s efforts with the American Bankers Association’s Bank Capture system, a bank robbery incident database, as well as the National Shrink Database, a retail loss incident resource designed to measure retail shrink in the US.
Mr. Longo oversees CAP Index’s UK market as well as the company’s vast reseller program. He also serves on the Board of Advisors for the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC) and the Restaurant Loss Prevention & Security Association (RLPSA), is an Advisory Member of the ASIS Banking and Financial Services Security Council, and serves on the Vendor Advisory Board for Loss Prevention Magazine.
VP, Consulting and Analytics
Basia Pietrawska joined CAP Index in 2007 as a Research Analyst. Today, she serves as the company’s Vice President, Consulting and Analytics , where she oversees client data analysis – from proof of concept through customized risk assessment models. With expertise in spatial analysis, she expertly combines mapping with data analysis. She works with clients representing various industries, including retail, banking, and the government, to develop customized solutions for reducing crime risk and loss.
Ms. Pietrawska holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social and Cognitive Psychology from Jacobs University Bremen (formerly International University Bremen). She received a Master of Science degree in Criminology from the University of Pennsylvania.
Brian R. Cunningham, PMP
VP of Systems Development
Brian Cunningham is CAP Index’s Vice President of Systems Development – responsible for establishing, planning and administering the overall policies and goals of the company’s IT department. An experienced application developer, Mr. Cunningham serves as the primary liaison between CAP Index’s Sales and IT teams, ensuring that all products are designed according to specification. He also manages the development, implementation, and maintenance of all internal business application systems.
Brian holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography from Bloomsburg University. He earned his Project Management Professional (PMP) designation from the Project Management Institute.
VP of Operations
An integral member of the CAP Index team, Kathleen Malazita began working with the company in 1996. Since then, she has held positions in nearly every department – from administration through production. Currently serving as Vice President of Operations, she is responsible for overseeing relationships with CAP Index’s accounting, banking, and legal advisors. She also supervises the company’s human resources, financial reporting, and budgeting functions, ensuring that all business operations run smoothly and efficiently.
Ms. Malazita holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Education from St. John Fisher College.
