s Supporting Research & Expanding Knowledge | CAP Index

“We have a wealth of crime and related data, and we have a staff with deep experience in criminology, sociology, and public safety. Is there some way we can we give back and support the broader community?”

That’s the question Grant Drawve, our VP of Geospatial Crime Solutions, and I wrestled with over multiple conversations. Grant’s experience as a professor had him land on student research support as a possible option. That idea resonated with me. It was a nod to the work Professor Bob Figlio and I did at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania before we co-founded CAP Index. And through that experience I learned firsthand the importance of reliable, high-quality datasets as well as the challenges involved with finding them. From those conversations, CAP Index – Data for Good took shape.

Through this program, we are offering our curated data together with the Research and Innovation teams’ practitioner expertise to students and researchers exploring how crime risk, geography, and social context shape real-world outcomes. We are volunteering our time and support because we believe that stronger research strengthens understanding and improves how public safety challenges can be addressed.

In the end, supporting research that expands knowledge and drives meaningful community impact is not separate from our mission. It is an integral part of it.

Since I know that many of our customers and peers are mentors, instructors, or supporters of students entering these fields, I encourage you to share Data for Good with them. We look forward to learning from the research and insights that emerge from this effort.
