CAP Index Scoring Methodologies – Getting Technical

CAP Scores for a specific business application are generated using one of our four scoring methodologies. These scoring methodologies account for the fact that perpetrators often travel varying distances to commit crimes (the “journey to crime”) depending on the target. The scoring methodologies also consider the nature and attractiveness of different types of targets for different types of crimes.

Each of the CAP Index scoring methodologies designates a progressively larger “sphere of influence” that is used to assess the risk of crime. Each sphere is defined by a maximum geographic radius or a population threshold. Here is an overview of each scoring methodology:

Common Uses for Each Scoring Methodology

The table below provides common uses for each CAP Index Scoring Methodology.  However, every organization is unique. Therefore, while this list suggests typical uses of each scoring methodology, that does not mean a given methodology necessarily offers the best fit for your organization.

Which Scoring Methodology is Right for You?

It may be beneficial to compare multiple scoring methodologies to identify the optimal approach for assessing crime risk at each of your locations. You may select any two scoring methodologies when ordering a CRIMECAST Premium Report. The team at CAP Index is available to discuss the various options and tools best suited for your organization. We can also provide a complimentary validation analysis of your incident data to illustrate the relationship between crime and loss at your locations.

Our property selectors are not discouraged from a site just because it receives a high score. What we do is issue every store – all of them – a security classification. The classification determines how we allocate our security resources to that store.

Claude Verville,

CAP Online is great. It is easy to use and quick!

Ken Wieczorek,

In industries where there is high public contact and a customer is coming to our location (such as retail), why would you leave it to chance when planning security when there is an easy, affordable tool? When investing a million dollars on a location, what is this small charge compared to what it may cost you when you get sued?

Jay Beighley,
Nationwide Insurance

CAP Index Assessments are a must for anyone engaged in asset protection. The new website is much improved and as important, easy to navigate.
